The new year is the perfect time to take up a new hobby. Whether you have chosen to cook more, learn how to sew or travel to new and exciting places, a new year means a fresh start and what could be more fulfilling than a new hobby?

If sports is more your thing, then perhaps you’re looking for a new one to try in 2016. Of course there are your usual choices such as football, rugby and tennis, but why not mix it up a bit and try something different. There are tons of sporting activities out there that you may not have even heard of such as zorbing and paddle boarding and could be a lot more fun that just a regular sport.

Below are some of our top picks of new sports to try this year.

Trampolining

You may have heard of trampolining before or tried it in school, but the sport is making a comeback, with Trampolining parks opening up and down the country. So rather than just bouncing on one lonely trampoline, you get to complete an entire course of trampolining activities. Whether you’re a complete novice or a total pro, anyone can go trampolining.

Zorbing

The sport of zorbing involves participants immersing themselves inside a plastic ball then rolling down a hill. Sounds strange, but many people enjoy zorbing and is a lot of fun once you give it a go. Zorbing can also take place on water, where you have to place yourself inside the ball and walk across a lake or river. It was first played in New Zealand, but now Zorbing is a worldwide activity that many enjoy.

Handball

The indoor sport of handball is great for those who enjoy playing volleyball and netball. The aim of the game is to pass the ball between your teammates, on a court, using only your hands. Participants must then try and get the ball into a football like goal to score. This fast paced sport combines elements of football and basketball and is a great choice for those who want to try something new.

Paddle Boarding

If you’re one for water sports then paddle boarding may be the perfect activity for you. Participants must stand or kneel on a surfboard and propel themselves by using their paddle to move across the water. Tournaments usually consist of participants racing each other across a certain area of ocean or down a lake.

Ultimate Frisbee

You may have already heard of frisbee, but have you ever heard of ultimate frisbee? This non-contact sport involves players passing a disc or frisbee across an open field. Points are scored when a player catches the disc within their zone, but you cannot walk or take steps while holding the frisbee.

Dodgeball

Dodgeball is a sport that has been growing in popularity over the past few years and is one that many have chosen to take part in. The game involves two teams throwing balls across a court at each other and the aim is to not let a ball hit you. The sport was made famous by the 2004 film of the same name and ever since, it has gained lots of popularity within the sporting world.

Extreme Obstacle Courses

Obstacle courses have long been a favourite of those who want to test their strength and fitness levels, but there has been a recent resurgence in the taking part of extreme obstacle courses. Events like Tough Mudder and X Runner have allowed people to test their abilities and push themselves to the extreme. Some of these courses see participants having to run through electrical wires, ice cold water and of course, mud.
